Con-Way Cuts Jobs and Outlook (CNW)Dec 9, 2008Con-Way Inc. (CNW) announced late Monday it is lowering its 2008 profit forecast by about 15 percent and will cut about 1,450 jobs, which is 8 percent of its work force. The company is struggling with a slowing economy that has reduced demand for shipping goods. The company now expects earnings to come in the $2.20-$2.35 per share range, down from its previous forecast of $2.60 to $2.80 per share. The consensus estimates are currently at $2.79. The Bottom Line We had removed shares of CNW from our "Recommended" list on Aug.25, when the stock was trading at $50.03. The company has a 1.55% dividend yield, based on last night's closing stock price of $25.77. The stock has technical support in the $20-21 price area. If that fails to hold, then $14-15 may be the next area it could test. We would avoid the shares at this current time. Con-Way Inc. (CNW) is not recommended at this time, holding a Dividend.com Rating of 3.0 out of 5 stars. Con-Way Inc. Beats Lowered Q3 Earnings Estimates (CNW)Oct 23, 2008Trucking company Con-Way Inc. (CNW) reported a quarterly net profit on Wednesday that beat recently-reduced estimates. The company is part of an industry has been hit hard by weak freight volumes and a highly competitive pricing environment. The collapse of the housing market, weakening retail and auto sales, plus the overall weakening of the U.S. economy have all been adding to the problems the company faces. The company reaffirmed its earlier full-year earnings estimate of $2.60 to $2.80 a share. The Bottom Line We have avoided the shares of CNW since our early June coverage began, when the stock was trading at the $47.68 level. The company currently has a 1.19% dividend yield, based on last night's closing stock price of $33.48. We think the earnings estimates may still be a bit high, as the consumer slowdown may be only beginning to reach other areas that affect the company's business. We remain cautious on this stock for now, but we'll follow the progress to see if any early signs of a turnaround present themselves. Con-Way Inc. (CNW) is not recommended at this time, holding a Dividend.com Rating of 3.1 out of 5 stars.
