  • OfficeMax Posts $395 Million Q4 Loss on Massive Write-Downs (OMX)

OfficeMax Incorporated (OMX) reported a $395 million fourth quarter loss on Wednesday, including a $429 million write-down to account for lower values of its goodwill, trade names and store assets. The company lost $395 million, or $5.21 per share, in the fiscal fourth quarter, compares to a profit of $71.5 million, or 92 cents per share, in the same period of the previous year. Excluding special one-time items, including the massive write-down, the company earned $1.9 million, or 2 cents per share. On average, analysts were expecting a profit of 15 cents per share on revenue of $1.94 billion. As for the full year results, the company lost $1.66 billion, or $21.90 per share, compared to a profit of $207.4 million, or $2.66 per share, in the previous fiscal year. The company remains cautious for 2009, saying it expects sales to decline from 2008 levels amid the tough economic environment. The Bottom Line Shares of OMX are way off Feb.2007 highs of $52 a share. We had removed the stock from our database coverage back in December, when the company announced it was suspending its dividend. The stock is now at new all-time technical support lows. If the shares can rebound, we see overhead resistance around the $8 price level. We would look elsewhere for better investment opportunities at this time. OfficeMax Incorporated (OMX) suspended dividend payouts back in Dcember. • OfficeMax Maxed Out (OMX)

OfficeMax (OMX) beat the earnings per share estimates by 6 cents, but revenues fell nearly 7 percent to $1.98 billion. Same-store sales, a key gauge of retail performance, fell 10 percent. Office suppliers have seen weakening results over the past 12 months, as slowing job growth and the weaker economic environment continue to take a toll. Shares of OfficeMax are down nearly 65% in the last year. Despite an attractive 4.25% dividend yield (based on last night's closing price of $14.11), we are not recommending these shares. We feel the only play for this sector is Staples (SPLS) , but that is a name we are not presently recommending either. In short, avoid the office supply space for now. We'll keep everyone posted on any changes on our ratings/sentiment. OfficeMax (OMX) is not recommended at this time, holding a Dividend.com Rating of 3.0 out of 5 stars. • Dividend Play Stuck in Third Place

If you follow the Wall Street analysts, OfficeMax (OMX) seems to always be in "turnaround mode." News has not been good for the 3rd largest office supply retailer. OfficeMax's stock price has dropped nearly 36% in the last three weeks, and on top of that, they were recently removed from the prestigious S&P 500 index. The company derives nearly 80% of its revenues from U.S. operations, and has been slowly but steadily losing market share to the No.1 & 2 players in their space, Staples (SPLS) and Office Depot (ODP) . Staples' recent announcement that they are acquiring Corporate Express furthers their global reach and distances them from OfficeMax even more. Thus, we're presently giving OfficeMax a "not recommended" rating. OMX's dividend yield going into today is a deceptively high 4.2% -- there is growing concern about the sustainability of such a large dividend payout. For shareholders who may be long this stock, we recommend taking a peak at Circuit City's recent history to educate yourself about what can happen when a company consistently falls further behind their retail competitors. Office Max (OMX) currently holds a Dividend.com rating of 3.0 out of 5 stars.
