  • Anadarko Petroleum Corporation Will Pay $5.15B to Settle Cleanup Claims; Shares Soar (APC)

It was announced on Thursday that Anadarko Petroleum (APC) will pay $5.15 billion to settle claims related to Tronox, a paints material maker. Tronox was Kerr-McGee's titanium oxide unit, and was spun-off in 2005;  Anadarko Petroleum bought Kerr-McGee in 2006. According to Reuters, the settlement of $5.15 billion will "resolve environmental cleanup claims stemming from the 2009 bankruptcy of paint materials maker Tronox, the biggest environmental bankruptcy settlement on record." Tronox filed for bankruptcy in 2009, after environmental liabilities proved too much for the company. In December, All Gropper, a U.S. bankruptcy judge, noted that Kerr-McGee's spin-off of Tronox showed "intent to hinder." When the case was initially brought up, Judge Gropper stated that Anadarko should pay in the range of $5.15 billion to more than $14 billion for cleanup costs. With the settlement concluding much uncertainty for APC, its stock was up $12.55, or 14.51%, on the day. YTD, the company's stock is up 10.07%.

  • Anadarko Petroleum's PT Raised at Credit Suisse (APC)

On Wednesday, Credit Suisse raised the price target on Anadarko Petroleum (APC) and reiterated its "Outperform" rating on the oil and gas company. Credit Suisse raised APC's price target to $122.00 from $109.00, which suggests a 32.5% upside to the stock's Wednesday closing price of $92.11. Credit Suisse gave the following reason for the boosted PT: "Given the compelling risk/reward profile, the Credit Suisse Investment Policy Committee (IPC) is adding APC to the U.S. Focus List as the stock is the most compelling name in the large cap E&P group. We are raising our target price to $122, which is at parity with NAV. In the shale era, early identification of a franchise asset, which provides a large inventory of lower risk and high-return development drilling opportunities, can lead to sustained differential stock performance. While APC is blessed with several core franchise assets in the U.S. (Wattenberg, Eagle Ford, Marcellus), initial drilling results suggest that 'the next big thing' in their U.S. onshore portfolio could be the Delaware Basin Wolfcamp, based on strong initial results.” APC stock was down a fraction at Wednesday's market close. YTD, the stock is up over 21%.

    The Bottom Line
