Fund Description

The Fund pursues its investment objective by investing primarily in the common stocks of mid-sized companies and focuses on companies whose stock prices are believed to be undervalued by the Fund’s portfolio management or that have fallen out of favor with the market. The Fund invests, under normal circumstances, at least 80% of its net assets (plus any borrowings for investment purposes) in equity securities of companies whose market capitalization falls, at the time of purchase, within the capitalization range of the Russell Midcap® Value Index. The market capitalizations within the index will vary, but as of June 30, 2024, they ranged from approximately $170 million to $78.43 billion.From time to time, the Fund may invest in shares of companies through initial public offerings.The Fund may also invest in foreign securities, as well as in real estate investment trusts (“REITs”) and similar REIT-like entities.As defensive value managers, portfolio management generally looks for companies with:•strong management teams;•strong and stable balance sheets and solid recurring free cash flows;•attractive relative and absolute valuation ratios or that have underperformed recently;•favorable reward to risk characteristics;•sustainable competitive advantages that are trading at attractive valuations; and•strong long-term prospects.Portfolio management’s philosophy is to weigh a security’s downside risk before considering its upside potential, which may help provide an element of capital preservation.As part of its investment process, portfolio management considers environmental, social, and governance (“ESG”) risks and opportunities (“ESG Factors”) that it believes are financially material, alongside other fundamental investment factors. Examples of potential financially material ESG Factors include corporate governance, company culture, exposure to climate change, and human capital management. To assess ESG Factors, portfolio management uses issuer reports, third-party data, and internally-generated analyses and may engage directly with issuers. ESG Factors are one of many considerations in the investment decision-making process and may not be determinative in deciding to include or exclude an investment from the portfolio.

Kevin Preloger is Co-Portfolio Manager of Janus Henderson. He was a Portfolio Manager at Perkins. He joined Perkins in 2002 as a research analyst covering the financial services sector. He was named co-portfolio manager of the Large Cap Value strategy in 2006 and became sole portfolio manager in 2018. He was named co-portfolio manager of the Mid Cap Value strategy in 2013 and the SMID Cap Value strategy in 2017. Prior to joining Perkins, he worked as an analyst at ABN AMRO/LaSalle Bank Wealth Management and covered the financial services and technology sectors during his five-year tenure at the firm. Mr. Preloger received his bachelor of arts degree in economics from Northwestern University.

Justin Tugman, CFA, is a Co-Portfolio Manager of Janus Henderson. Mr. Tugman joined Perkins, an affiliate of Janus Capital, in June 2004. Mr. Tugman has co-managed the Small Cap Value strategy since 2009, the Mid Cap Value strategy since 2015 and the SMID Cap Value strategy since 2017. Mr. Tugman served as a research analyst through 2012, covering the energy and utility sectors upon joining Perkins in 2004. Prior to joining Perkins, he worked at Simmons & Company International as an analyst covering the energy sector during his four-year tenure at the firm. Mr. Tugman received his bachelor of science degree in finance from the University of Wyoming and an MBA with a concentration in finance from Tulane University. He holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.
