  • McDonald's Corporation Posts Lower Feb. Comps (MCD)

Before the opening bell on Monday, fast food giant McDonald's (MCD) reported that its global comparable sales for February dropped by 0.3%. The 0.3% drop was worse than expectations of a 0.1% drop in global comps. MCD's U.S. sales were down 1.4%, its European sales were up 0.6%, and the Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa (APMEA) segment was down 2.6% for the month. Extreme weather and challenging business dynamics were blamed for the 1.4% fall in U.S. sales. The 2.6% drop in APMEA was due to weakness in Japanese sales, a slight shift in the date of the Chinese New Year, and poor results in Australia. Europe's slight increase was due to positive sales in the U.K. and France, even though sales were weaker in Germany. McDonald's president and CEO, Don Thompson, had the following comments about the company's February results: "McDonald's global growth priorities - optimizing our menu, modernizing the customer experience and broadening accessibility to Brand McDonald's - are the foundation of our customer-centric approach to building our business for the long term. We are intent on improving our business performance by thoughtfully evolving our approach to ensure that we are delivering the most compelling value, service and convenience to each of the approximately 70 million customers who choose McDonald's each day." MCD stock was inactive in pre-market trading. YTD, the company's stock is down 0.94%.
