    Discount retailer Dollar Tree, Inc. (DLTR) said Tuesday that its third quarter profit rose 58% from last year, beating analyst expectations. The Chesapeake, Virginia-based company reported third quarter net income of $68.2 million, or 76 cents per share, compared with $43.1 million, or 47 cents per share, in the same quarter last year. On average, Wall Street analysts expected a smaller profit of 66 cents per share. Quarterly sales rose over 12% from last year to $1.25 billion, while same-store sales jumped 6.5%. Dollar Tree shares rose $1.85, or +3.8%, in premarket trading Tuesday. The Bottom Line Shares of DLTR are off 52-week highs of $52 a share. The stock has near-term technical support in the $46-$47 price area. If the shares can firm up, we see overhead resistance around the $52 price level.   • Dollar Tree's Q2 Profit Surges 51%, Beating View (DLTR)

    Discount variety store operator Dollar Tree, Inc. (DLTR) said Wednesday that its second quarter profit jumped 51% from last year, helped by cost-conscious consumers amid the economic recession. The Chesapeake, Virginia-based company reported second quarter net income of $56.9 million, or 63 cents per share, up from $37.6 million, or 42 cents per share, in the year-ago period. Revenue jumped by 12% from last year, to $1.22 billion. On average, Wall Street analysts expected a lower profit of 54 cents per share, on matching revenue of $1.22 billion. Looking ahead, the company predicted third quarter profit to range from 58 cents per share to 64 cents per share. Analysts currently expect a lesser 54 cents per share. Dollar Tree shares rose $3.08, or +6.4%, in morning trading Wednesday. The Bottom Line Shares of DLTR are hitting new 52-week and all-time highs of $51 a share.
