  • Valspar Reports Weak Outlook; Shares Fall (VAL)

    Shares of paints and coatings company The Valspar Corporation (VAL) tumbled over 6% on Tuesday morning following the release of the company's third quarter results and weak earnings outlook.. The Minneapolis, MN-based company reported third quarter earnings of $93.81 million, or $1.04 per share, up from $86.41 million, or 92 cents per share a year ago. Excluding special items, earnings were $1.07 per share, from 97 cents per share last year. Despite the rise in earnings, VAL earnings fell below the average analyst estimate of $1.09 per share. Total revenue for the quarter came in at $1.089 billion, from $1.078 billion a year ago. Analysts expected to see revenue of $1.13 billion. CEO of VAL Gary Hendrickson noted, "we continue to drive strong volume growth from our new business initiatives in the consumer paint, packaging and wood product lines. However, sales and earnings finished slightly below our expectations for the quarter due to continued macro-economic headwinds in key general industrial market segments and certain international regions." Looking forward, the company has cut its valuation range from $3.60-$3.60 to $3.45-$3.55 per share. This estimate would fall below the analysts' estimate of $3.70 per share. The company noted that it expects to see weak demand for coating products. Valspar shares were down $4.43, or 6.26%, during Tuesday morning trading. The stock is up 6% YTD.   • Valspar Corp Q1 Earnings Misses Wall Street Views; Trims Full-Year Outlook (VAL)

    Before the bell on Monday, paints and coatings provider The Valspar Corporation (VAL) posted a slight dip in first-quarter profits on lower revenue, missing expectations, as international markets performed poorly. The Minneapolis-based company said its first-quarter profit fell to $55.02 million from $55.78 million. However, on a per share basis the company reported an EPS of 60 cents, up from 58 cents in the same quarter a year earlier. According to analysts polled by Thomson Reuters, this still missed the Wall Street consensus view of 67 cents per share. Revenue was also down, coming in at $875.24 million from $885.64 million in the year before. Analysts were expecting revenue to be $922.05 million. Furthermore, Valspar trimmed its full-year outlook. The firm now sees EPS to be in a range between $3.60 and $3.80, compared to its previous forecast of $3.65 and $3.85. Analysts project a full-year EPS of $3.79 for VAL. Valspar shares were down $3.97, or -5.93%, during pre-market trading on Tuesday. The stock is up about 51% over the past year.
