Is It Time for Timber?

No matter how you cut it or slice it, there’s plenty of uncertainty in the markets these days. Stocks have continued to rise and are now trading for expensive valuations. At the same time, we have numerous geopolitical issues to contend with, while the home front isn’t exactly conflict-free either. And all of this is starting to make some analysts and pundits worried. The possibility of another bear market and heightened volatility is real.

And with that, investors should take some time, clear their heads, and take a walk in the woods.

But they should also do so with their portfolios. Timberland could be exactly the asset class investors need to provide them with steady returns through the upcoming uncertainty.

Boring, but Beautiful

Tucked inside Yale’s $25 billion endowment is an odd asset class. Yale owns an entire forest roughly the size of Connecticut. And at first blush, most people would state that the reason why the university owns such a huge parcel of land must be because they plan on developing it into housing, office, retail and other living space. But that really isn’t the case. The value is in the land and trees themselves.
