Smart Beta and Dividend Investing

It’s an exciting time to be a dividend investor. You might have heard about how everyone is moving towards passively managed investments, and that no one should own anything but index funds today.

Don’t believe it. That story is only half true, and investing based on factors like dividends is, over the long run, a much more effective investment strategy. More on all of that in a moment, but first let me take a minute to introduce myself.

To give you a brief background, I’m Michael McDonald. I’m a PhD in Finance, a former Wall Street trader and hedge fund quant. I am a university professor of Finance and a partner at an investment consulting firm, Morning Investments. My firm provides services for hedge funds, asset managers, and alternative investments such as litigation finance firms.

I want to spend this first column talking about how individual investors with an appetite for higher returns and a willingness to take on a little bit of volatility should consider investing. It revolves around dividends.
