  • The Southern Company Posts Lower Q3 Earnings; Misses Views (SO)

    Before the bell on Wednesday, power producer Southern Company (SO) announced its third quarter earnings, posting lower earnings than last year's Q3. SO's Earnings In Brief -Southern's revenues were reported at $5.017 billion, which was down slightly from 2012's Q3 revenues of $5.049 billion. Analysts were expecting revenues of $5.37 billion. -Earnings came in at $852 million, or 97 cents per share, down from $976 million, or $1.11, in Q3 2012. -Net income, not including items, came in at $945 million, or $1.08 per share, missing analysts' EPS estimate of $1.14. CEO Commentary Southern's chairman, president and CO, Thomas A. Fanning, explained the quarterly results: "During the past quarter, our service territory experienced its highest level of rainfall in nearly 100 years. At the same time, cooler temperatures prevailed across our territory. For instance, in metro Atlanta – where we would normally expect to see more than 100 hours of summer temperatures above 90 degrees – we only saw one such hour. This unique combination of circumstances resulted in one of the mildest southeastern summers in the last 20 years." Dividend Brief There was no mention of Southern's dividend in the earnings release, but the company's quarterly dividend of 50.75 cents goes ex-dividend tomorrow, October 31. The company's last dividend raise occurred in January of this year, marking the 12th consecutive year of increased payouts to shareholders. Stock Performance SO's stock was slipping in pre-market trading this morning, and was down 38 cents, or 0.87%, at the time of this writing. YTD, the company's stock is down 3.17%, compared with a 24% gain in the S&P 500 this year.
