  • Fred's September Comps Rise 2.8% (FRED)

    On Thursday, Fred's, Inc. (FRED) reported a 2.8% jump in its comparable store sales in September. This increase compares to a 3.8% decline a year ago. The company noted that positive trends in its general merchandise and pharmacy reflected sales. The company reported that its five week sales rose 4% to $177.3 million, from $170.9 million a year ago. Year to date, Fred's total sales were $1.30 billion, up 1% from last year's total sales of $1.28 billion. The company noted: "We continue to experience success from our reconfiguration plan, as the pharmacy department comparable store sales and script growth were key to this month's performance." The firm also remains confident that the third-quarter earnings would lie within the prior forecasted range. Fred's shares were mostly flat during pre-market trading Thursday. The stock is up 14% YTD.

  • Fred's Q2 Profit Slides Despite Higher Sales; Earnings Meet Estimates, But Revenues Miss (FRED)

    Before the opening bell on Thursday, discount retailer Fred's, Inc. (FRED) reported a 46% year-over-year decline in second quarter profits, despite a 2% rise in quarterly sales. Nonetheless, the company was able to meet Wall Street analysts' earnings expectations, but revenues came up a bit short of views. The Memphis, Tennessee-based company posted a second quarter net income of $3.3 million, or 9 cents per share, down from $6.1 million, or 17 cents per share, earned in the same period a year ago. According to analysts polled by Thomson Reuters, Fred's was expected to earn 9 cents per share in the second quarter. The company's total sales came in at $482.2 million in the most recent quarter, up from $470.8 million in sales posted in the second quarter of 2012. On average, analysts were expecting the company to see $482.45 million in revenues for the quarter. Fred's comparable store sales grew by 2.2% in the second quarter, compared to a 1.0% decline in same store sales in the year ago period. Looking ahead, Fred's expects total sales to increase between 1% and 3% year-over-year in the third quarter. Earnings for the third quarter are expected to come in between 19 cents and 23 cents per share. Analysts are expecting the company to earn 23 cents per share on sales of $460.97 million in the third quarter. For fiscal 2013, Fred's now expects earnings to come in between 81 cents and 86 cents per share. Previously, the company had forecasted earnings of 77 cents to 88 cents per share for 2013. Wall Street analysts are currently expecting the company to earn 85 cents per share for the year. Fred's shares were inactive during pre-market trading on Thursday. The stock is up 20.06% year-to-date.   • Fred's June Sales Increase 3%, Comps Rise 4.5% (FRED)

    On Tuesday discount retailer Fred's, Inc. (FRED) reported a 3% increase for its June sales to $187.7 million, from $182.6 million during the same period last year. In June, comparable store sales (also known as same-store sales) rose 4.5%, compared to a decline of 4% in June 2012. Total sales for the first five months of 2013 were $841.6 million, a 1% increase from $835.1 million a year ago. Fred's CEO Bruce A. Efird commented, "We are pleased to report a significant improvement in comparable store sales for June, which exceeded our expectations and reflected increased customer traffic and higher transaction amounts, coupled with the benefit of the calendar shift early in the month. Our general merchandise initiatives in June focused on driving customer traffic through promotions of consumables. In addition, improved weather conditions throughout our markets also were favorable to the Lawn & Garden, Summer Toys, and Seasonal departments, which are now expected to be on plan for this quarter. The trend in pharmacy department sales also shifted in June as comparable stores turned positive for the first time in 10 months, and the department continued to experience positive script growth. Our reconfiguration plan initiatives continue to gain traction, and, based on the results of the first two months of the quarter, we remain confident that our second quarter earnings will be in the range previously forecasted." Looking forward, the company expects to see second quarter earnings between 6 and 9 cents, compared to 17 cents per share last year. Analysts expect FRED to post earnings of 8 cents per share.
