Excluding one-time items, adjusted profit was 38 cents per share. Revenue plunged 23% from last year, to $778.19 million. • Vulcan Materials Slashes Dividend, Announces Share Offering, Offers Weak Guidance (VMC)

Cement and asphalt producer Vulcan Materials Company (VMC) on Wednesday cut its dividend in half, announced a 11.5 million share offering, and offered full-year 2009 guidance well below analyst estimates. The Birmingham, Alabama-based company said it has reduced its quarterly dividend payout from 50 cents to 25 cents in an effort to improve its cash position. Vulcan also announced an 11.5 million share public offering. The company expects proceeds from the sale to net around $500 million, which it will use to pay down debt, general corporate purposes, and possibly for strategic acquisitions. In another unwelcome bit of news for investors, Vulcan said its 2009 full-year profit would range from 70 cents to $1 per share. This estimate falls well below the average Wall Street analyst estimate for $1.13 per share. The company said that wet weather, combined with weak demand for construction materials, will hurt its profits this year. Vulcan Materials shares fell $2.17, or -5%, in morning trading Thursday. The Bottom Line We have avoided shares of VMC since our early June coverage began, when the stock was trading at $70.95. The company will now have a 2.27% dividend yield, based on last night's closing stock price of $43.97. The stock has technical support in the $35 price area. If the shares can firm up, we see overhead resistance around the $48-52 price levels. We would remain on the sidelines for now. Vulcan Materials Company (VMC) is not recommended at this time, holding a Dividend.com DARS™ Rating of 2.9 out of 5 stars.
