    Early on Wednesday, defense contractor Northrop Grumman Corporation (NOC) reported a higher second quarter profit, which was helped by increased sales. Both results easily topped Wall Street estimates. The Falls Church, Virginia-based company posted net earnings of $488 million, or $2.05 per share, in the second quarter, up from the $480 million, or $1.88 per share, earned in the same period a year ago. Northrop Grumman's pension-adjusted second quarter earnings came in at $1.97 per share compared to $1.79 last year. On average, analysts polled by Thomson Reuters were expecting the company to see $1.71 per share in earnings for the second quarter. The company's quarterly sales advanced to $6.294 billion, up slightly from the $6.274 billion in sales booked in the second quarter of 2012. Analysts were expecting the company to see revenues of $5.98 billion. Looking ahead to full year results, NOC sees earnings coming in between $7.60 and $7.80 per share, up from the previous outlook of earnings between $6.85 and $7.15 per share. Analysts expect the company to earn $7.18 per share in 2013. Furthermore, the company sees sales coming in around $24.3 billion in 2013, up from the previous view of $24 billion. Analysts are expecting the company to post revenues of $24.02 billion for the year. Northrop Grumman shares were up $2.34, or 2.64%, during pre-market trading on Wednesday.   • Northrop Grumman's Profit Declines; Beats Estimates (NOC)

    Security company, Northrop Grumman Corporation (NOC) saw lower profits for its first quarter, but beat estimates on both its earnings and its revenue on Wednesday. The Falls Church, VA based company saw a -3% decline in earnings for its first quarter. NOC's net income dropped to $489 million from $506 million share last year. On a per share basis, EPS rose to $2.03 from $1.96 last year. Excluding special items, earnings were $1.94 per share, which beat analysts estimate of $1.74 per share. Total sales for the quarter also came in above analysts estimates. The company reported revenue of $6.1 billion, down from $6.2 billion during the first quarter of last year. Analysts expected to see $5.96 billion in revenue. CEO Wes Bush commented, "looking ahead, we recognize that we are operating in an uncertain and constrained budget environment." Bush also noted that Northrop will maintain its focus on "program performance, effective cash deployment and portfolio alignment." The company reaffirmed its prior FY2013 earnings outlook of EPS between $6.85 and $7.15. Analysts expect to see earnings of $7.02 per share. NOC is expecting to see revenue for the year to be approximately $24 billion, which would match analysts estimate of $24 billion. Northrop Grumman shares were up $1.22, or 1.71% during Wednesday morning trading. The stock has increased 16% in the past year.
