    Before the opening bell on Wednesday, PNC Financial (PNC) reported its first quarter earnings, posting higher net income compared to last year's Q1. PNC's Earnings in Brief
    • PNC Financial's revenue for the first quarter came in at $3.78 billion, which was 5% from last year's Q1 figure of $3.96 billion.
    • PNC's net income came in at $1.06 billion, or $1.82 per share, which was up from last year's net income of $995 million, or $1.74 per share.
    • PNC beat earnings expectations of $1.66 EPS, but came in under revenue estimates of $3.85 billion.
    • Compared with the fourth quarter of 2013, PNC's net income and EPS came in slightly lower.
    CEO Commentary PNC's president and CEO, William S. Demchak, had the following comments: "PNC had a successful first quarter – our fourth straight quarter with net income of $1 billion or more. We grew loans and deposits, and we lowered expenses even as we continue to make investments across our businesses to enhance the customer experience and become more efficient. Based on the strength of our performance and balance sheet, we were pleased to announce plans to return more capital to our shareholders through a 9 percent increase in our quarterly dividend and reinstituted share repurchase programs." PNC's Dividend PNC announced a raise to its dividend at the beginning of April, boosting its quarterly payout to 48 cents from 44 cents. The company's next dividend is payable on May 5, and the stock went ex-dividend on April 11. Stock Performance PNC stock was inactive in pre-market trading. YTD, the stock is up 26.79%.

    Financial services company PNC Financial Services Group Inc (PNC) reported a 12% increase to its third quarter earnings on Wednesday. The Pittsburgh, PA-based company posted third quarter net income of $966 million, or $1.79 per share, up from $876 million, or $1.64 per share, a year ago. On average, analysts expected to see earnings of $1.62 per share. Revenue for the quarter totaled $3.92 billion, up from $4.09 billion last year. Analysts expected to see revenue of $3.88 billion. The company noted that the quarter's earnings were affected by ongoing loan growth, improvement in credit quality, fee income growth and expense management. PNC shares were up 59 cents, or 0.81%, during pre-market trading Wednesday. The stock is up 24% YTD.

  • PNC Comes Under Fed Investigation (PNC)

    PNC Financial announced Thursday that the U.S. Department of Justice is investigating its mortgage services and how it prices mortgage loans. The Justice Department, in collaboration with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, is investigating to see if PNC's mortgage prices "had a disparate impact on protected classes" writes Christina Rexrode. Though the company declined to give any official statements, the filing suggests that mortgages may have been skewed to unfairly affect people of certain ethnic groups or income levels. The bank has noted that it is cooperating and that the investigation is still in its early stages. PNC shares, despite the bad news, were able to finish Thursday's session up 43 cents, or 0.56%.
