  • KeyCorp Q3 Profit Rises on Commercial Loan Growth (KEY)

    KeyCorp (KEY) reported higher third quarter earnings on Wednesday, which came in above analysts' estimates. The Cleveland, OH-based company posted third quarter earnings of $266 million, or 29 cents per share, up from $214 million, or 23 cents per share, a year ago. On average, analysts expected to see earnings of 22 cents per share. The company noted that the increase in profits was primarily due to an 11% increase in commercial loans and fee-based businesses. Revenue for the quarter was $1.04 billion, down from $1.10 billion last year. Analysts expected to see revenue of $1.02 billion. Chairman and CEO Beth Mooney commented: "Key's results reflect another quarter of improved performance as we continued to grow our businesses, improve efficiency and execute on our capital priorities." Mooney noted that the bank's loan losses were at their lowest level since 2007. KEY also cut expenses by $207 million a year, beating its initial goal of $200 million. "This is an important milestone for us, and we believe that our cost discipline is now embedded within our culture, which will allow us to drive further efficiency improvements," Mooney added. KeyCorp shares were up 23 cents, or 1.94%, during Wednesday morning trading. The stock is up 44% YTD.

    On Thursday, financial services company KeyCorp (KEY) posted a decline in its second quarter earnings, but results still came in above analyst estimates. The Cleveland based company reported second quarter earnings of $198 million, or 22 cents per share, down from $231 million, or 24 cents per share a year ago. Analysts, on average, expected to see EPS of 20 cents. Net income from continuing operations dropped to $193 million, or 21 cents per share, from $217 million, or 23 cents per share a year ago. Revenue for the quarter rose to $1.015 billion from $1.0 billion in the second quarter of 2012. Analysts expected to see revenue of $1.02 billion. KeyCorp's CEO Beth Mooney noted, "compared to the first quarter, cautious client behavior led to slower loan growth” and “greater-than-anticipated pressure on our net interest margin." KeyCorp shares were up 8 cents, or 0.69% during Thursday morning trading. The stock is up 37% YTD.
