  • Legg Mason Inc Swings to Profit; Beats EPS Estimates (LM)

Asset management company Legg Mason Inc (LM) reported net income for its most recent third quarter after taking a loss in the third quarter of 2012.  LM's Earnings in Brief
    • LM reported Q3 earnings of $81.7 million, or 67 cents per share, compared to a loss of $453.9 million, or $3.45 per share, a year ago.
    • Excluding special items, earnings were $124.6 million, or $1.03 per share, coming in well above analyst estimates of 66 cents per share.
    • Revenue increased 7% to $720.1 million from $673.9 million last year. Analysts expected to see revenue of $725.85 million.
    • Assets under management rose 5% from last year, totaling $679.5 billion.
CEO Commentary Joseph A. Sullivan, president and CEO of Legg Mason, commented: "Legg Mason reported higher revenues, net inflows and solid earnings for the quarter as our flow picture and business mix continued to improve.  Overall investment performance remained strong and long-term flows were flat but improved, led by strong inflows at ClearBridge Investments and Brandywine Global, which offset outflows at Royce and Batterymarch.  The strengthening flow and mix picture coupled with our ongoing focus on controlling expenses positively impacted profitability and margins, a trend we have seen for the past three quarters.  During the quarter, we repurchased 2.3 million shares and will continue to look to prudently return capital to shareholders even as we focus on growing our franchise.  As another sign of our momentum, we saw strong investor demand for our recently completed senior notes offering, allowing us to lock in long-term debt capital at current historically low rates." LM's Dividend LM's board has declared its next quarterly dividend of 13 cents. The dividend will be paid on April 14 to shareholders of record on March 13. This dividend payout remains unchanged from the company's previous dividend that was paid on January 6. Stock Performance  Legg Mason shares were up 70 cents, or 1.62%, during pre-market trading Friday.

  • Susquehanna Maintains "Negative" Rating on Legg Mason (LM)

Susquehanna International reported on Wednesday that it has maintained a "Negative" rating on Legg Mason Inc (LM) . The firm has reiterated a "Negative" rating on LM, but has increased the company's price target from $23 to $24. This new price target suggests an 18% decline from the stock's current price of $32.74. An analyst from the firm noted: “We are raising our f2Q14 estimate to $0.6 Negative. 0 from $0.48 reflective of a lower tax rate and some revenue benefits from the market lift in September. We are modeling a 15% GAAP tax rate in f2Q as a result of new U.K. corporate tax reductions that were put into place. Our calendar 2013 and 2014 estimates are now $1.70 and $2.00 compared to $1.61 and $1.90, previously. The calendar 2014 revision is reflective of higher buybacks and some flow-through with higher equity asset levels to end the current quarter. Our target is now $24 or 12x our new calendar 2014 estimate. We expect net long-term outflows of $5 billion-$6 billion this quarter or a 4% organic decay rate, the worst since December 2012. Frankly, we do not think estimates or flow matter all that much to shares. The ability to repurchase stock remains the most important driver of the equity.” Legg Mason shares were up 14 cents, or 0.43%, during Wednesday morning trading. The stock is up 27% YTD.
