    Alcoholic beverage giant Anheuser Busch Inbev (BUD) on Wednesday posted better-than-expected fourth quarter earnings, although total beer volumes fell from last year amid tougher competition. BUD's Earnings in Brief
    • Adjusted Q4 profit rose to $2.37 billion, or $1.46 per share, compared with $1.77 billion, or $1.10 per share, in the year-ago period. Analysts expected much lower earnings of $1.31 per share.
    • Revenue rose 4.6% from last year to $11.71 billion, just about matching analysts' view of $11.70 billion.
    • On a sour note, BUD noted that total beer volumes declined 1.7% from last year.
    CEO Commentary BUD management commented via press release, "We faced some challenging macro-economic conditions in a number of our markets during the year, resulting in a volume performance below our expectations. However, we are proud of the way our people stepped up to those challenges and remained focused on driving future profitable growth and shareholder value creation. We are excited about the plans we have in place to drive top-line growth in 2014, and are supporting these plans with incremental investments in sales & marketing and commercial capex." BUD's New Dividend The company's board of directors proposed a semi-annual dividend of 1.45 EUR per share (about $1.99 in USD), which is subject to shareholder approval at the company's annual meeting in April. If approved, the ex-date for the payout will be on May 5 with a pay date of May 8. Share Performance Shares of BUD have fallen nearly 4% since the start of 2014, compared with a flat S&P 500. BUD stock rose about $1, or 1%, in pre-market trading Wednesday.
