  • Market Wrap-up for Apr. 9 - Earnings Tip: Keep Your Eyes on Guidance

After yesterday's market close, aluminum giant Alcoa (AA) unofficially kicked off the Q1 earnings season of 2014. The first three months of the this year have been characterized by harsh weather conditions and a market struggling to find its way. Look for the weather issues to make their way into a number of reports, as the frigid cold and heavy snow slowed down a number of firms. Even more important than the weather is guidance, and investors will want to keep their eyes on each company's guidance, as that theme looks to dominate this season once again. The last round of earnings (for the final quarter of 2013) saw a shift in how markets perceived each company's earnings release. It seemed that the actual numbers in the report were far and away overshadowed by the guidance and outlook the company provided. In fact, there were many cases where a company reported a weak past quarter, missing estimates, only to see its stock jump based on a favorable outlook. The Focus on Guidance

The special attention paid to guidance likely stems from a few different factors. First, the Fed is beginning to wind down its asset purchasing program, something that concerns a lot of investors as they feel that growth may be hard to come by. Positive guidance helps to alleviate that fear and ensures that the Fed's withdrawal from the market won't hurt a particular company. Second, markets are sitting near their all-time highs, making many skeptical of whether or not the growth can continue; strong guidance can help solidify investor confidence. We typically urge investors to separate earnings reports into two parts: the numbers and the guidance. For the time being, it appears that the Street holds the latter in higher regard. While numbers will still be important, as a blockbuster quarter can be a great boost for a stock, keep your eyes on guidance as it will more than likely be the determining factor in each earnings release.
