Banks Open Earnings Season Into a Market That Can't Decide What It Believes

Q2 earnings season kicks off in earnest on July 14, when JPMorgan, Bank of America, Citigroup, and Wells Fargo report within a day or two of each other, and the timing could not be more interesting. The big four arrive with the Dow sitting at record highs above 52,900, the Nasdaq still nursing a semiconductor-driven wobble, and Wall Street strategists publicly disagreeing about whether the S&P 500 heads to 7,100 or 8,250 by year-end. Bank earnings won’t resolve that debate, but they’ll supply the first hard data point of the quarter on whether the real economy is holding up as well as the equity market’s record highs suggest.
