One of the biggest determinants of a successful portfolio comes down to asset allocation. That is the combination of stocks, bonds, cash and other assets and how they relate to each other.

Getting allocation right is absolutely critical and has more to do with your overall returns than individual security selection. And, typically, investors get more conservative as they get older – holding more bonds and cash than equities.

However, investors might want to rethink tradition.

Several factors are making a more conservative approach to asset allocation obsolete. The truth is, you might need to hold more equities later in life. And that throws traditional financial planning out the window.
