Monsanto Company Beats Q1 Estimates; Reaffirms Outlook (MON)


Before the opening bell on Wednesday morning, Monsanto Company (MON) reported its first quarter results, posting results that beat analysts’ estimates.

MON’s Earnings in Brief

  • Monsanto reported first quarter revenues of $2.87 billion, which is down from last year’s Q1 revenues of $3.14 billion, but above analysts’ estimates of $2.8 billion.
  • Net income attributable to the company for the quarter came in at $243 million, or 47 cents per share, which is also down from last year’s Q1 figures of $368 million, or 67 cents per share. Analysts were expecting EPS of 35 cents.
  • Monsanto has reaffirmed its FY2015 guidance, and sees EPS in the range of $5.78-$6.03. For the next quarter, the company expects EPS to be down between 5% and 10%, due to lower U.S. corn acres.

Monsanto’s chairman and CEO Hugh Grant had the following comments: “We made significant progress on key milestones in the first quarter that reinforce the confidence we have in delivering in fiscal year 2015 and over the multi-year horizon. The differentiator for our business remains our focus on continued innovation both in our core business and new platforms. The near-term headwinds in agriculture persist, but our ability to deliver new solutions to help farmers improve yields while efficiently using resources provides the opportunity to deliver growth in both the current environment and over the longer-term.”

MON’s Dividend

Monsanto will pay its next quarterly dividend of 49 cents on January 30. The stock goes ex-dividend today.
