Before the opening bell on Friday morning, Acuity Brands (AYI) reported its first quarter results, posting higher revenues and net income compared to last year’s Q1.

AYI’s Earnings in Brief

  • Acuity Brands reported first quarter revenues of $647.4 million, which is up from last year’s Q1 revenues of $574.7 million.
  • Net income for the quarter came in at $51.1 million, or $1.18 per share, up from last year’s $44.5 million, or $1.03 per share. On an adjusted basis, EPS came in at $1.32, compared to last year’s 96 cents.

CEO Commentary

AYI chairman, president and CEO Vernon J. Nagel had the following comments: “We were extremely pleased with our record fiscal 2015 first quarter results. Gross profit margin of 42.2 percent increased 90 basis points over prior year’s first quarter, while adjusted operating profit margin of 14.9 percent increased 230 basis points over last year’s first quarter adjusted operating profit margin. Our variable contribution margin, i.e., the incremental adjusted operating profit as a percentage of the increase in net sales, was over 33 percent. We believe our record first quarter results reflect our ability to provide customers truly differentiated value from our industry-leading portfolio of innovative lighting and control solutions along with superior service.”

AYI’s Dividend

Acuity Brands will pay its next quarterly dividend of 13 cents on February 2. The stock goes ex-dividend on January 16.
