After something of a bloodbath on Wall Street yesterday, investors have been left with an uneasy feeling in their stomachs. Yesterday, it was hinted that the Fed may raise interest rates earlier than previously expected, given an increase in wage inflation. Markets took to a selling frenzy (also fueled by Argentina’s second debt default in 13 years), producing one of the worst trading days all year. Then, this morning saw non-farm U.S. payrolls increase less than expected, prompting the employment rate to tick up to 6.2%, making for a mixed and confusing reaction.

Special, or one-time dividends, are payouts from a company that are separate from its regular dividend. In some cases a company may not even pay a regular dividend but will still pay a special dividend. There is no formula for predicting or anticipating a company that will pay one, as they are up to the discretion of the firm. Typically, special dividends are paid after exceptional earnings in an effort to reward long term investors. You may also see certain stock splits labeled as special dividends depending on the nature of the event.
