  • Braclays Cuts Earnings Estimates for Great Plains Energy (GXP)

Analysts at Barclays Capital cut their rating on public utility company Great Plains Energy Incorporated (GXP) Friday, citing a lower-than-expected rate increase in Kansas. Barclays Capital said it has lowered its earnings estimates on Kansas City-based GXP through 2010. Kansas City Power & Light, which is a unit of GXP, on Friday negotiated a $59 million rate increase for its Kansas electric power customers, which was lower than the $71.6 million the company had originally sought. Despite the earnings estimate decrease, Barclays maintained its "Equal-weight" rating and $18 price target on GXP shares. GXP shares, which closed Thursday at $15.71, fell 10 cents, or -0.64%, in Friday afternoon trading. The Bottom Line We removed shares of GXP from our "recommended" list last Aug.15, when the stock was trading at $24.29. The company has a dividend yield of 5.28%, based on last night's closing stock price of $15.71. The stock has technical support in the $13 price area. If the shares can firm up, we see overhead resistance around the $20 price levels. We would remain on the sidelines for now.
