  • Linear Technology Corporation Just Misses Q2 Estimates; Raises Dividend (LLTC)

After the closing bell, integrated circuits company Linear Technology Corporation (LLTC) announced its fiscal 2014 second quarter earnings, posting slightly higher revenues than last year's same quarter. LLTC Earnings in Brief
    • Linear Technology reported Q2 revenue of $334.6 million, which was up 9.6% from last year's Q2 revenue of $305.3 million.
    • LLTC's net income for the quarter came in at $104.8 million, a 17.9% increase from last year's Q2 net income.
    • Linear's diluted EPS for the quarter was also up from last year's Q2, coming in at 44 cents for the most recent quarter from last year's Q2 diluted EPS of 38 cents.
    • LLTC came in slightly below analysts' estimates of 45 cents EPS on revenues of $334.79 million.
    • Linear Technology's earnings and revenue were both lower than its Q1 results.
CEO Commentary Lothar Maier, CEO of LLTC, had the following to say about the company's quarterly report: “As we noted last quarter, our December quarter is generally a slower quarter for us as the automotive and industrial markets tend to be weaker. Though automotive continued to grow modestly, the industrial market was down for us and we ended the quarter with total revenues down sequentially 1.7%, in line with the midpoint of our guidance as the quarter generally went as expected. We are encouraged that this decline was modest compared to recent years and that we grew revenues year-over-year by 9.6% over the second quarter of fiscal 2013. In addition, we were able to hold gross margin flat at 75.3% and we managed expenses accordingly to minimize the impact on earnings, which were down 2.9% or one cent per share." Dividend Raised LLTC raised its quarterly dividend by 1 cent and will now pay 27 cents per quarter. This marks a 3.8% increase to the company's dividend, and LLTC now has an annualized payout of $1.08. The dividend is payable on February 26 to all shareholders on record as of February 14, and the stock goes ex-dividend on February 12. Stock Performance LLTC shares were up 70 cents, or 1.57%, at market close, and were still increasing in after hours trading. This year, the company's stock is down 0.87%.

    The Bottom Line

  • Linear Technology Misses Q1 EPS Estimates (LLTC)

Linear Technology (LLTC) released its earnings results for the fiscal quarter ended September 29, 2013 on Tuesday after the closing bell. The circuit manufacturer reported first quarter earnings of 45 cents per share, slightly below analysts estimates of 46 cents. Revenues were reported at $340.4 million, just below analyst expectations of $339.26 million. Commenting on the company's outlook, CEO Lothar Maier noted "Looking ahead, our second fiscal quarter has been challenging over the past three years partially due to the December quarter being a historically slow quarter for the automotive and industrial end-markets. Our book to bill ratio for the first quarter was slightly positive, however, bookings normally weaken the last month of the December quarter due to the holiday period. In addition, business in the United States may be impacted by the current budgeting stalemate at the Federal Government level. Accordingly, we are forecasting revenue for our second quarter to be flat to down 4% from the first quarter of fiscal 2014." Linear Technology shares traded 1.16% lower during Tuesday's session. Year-to-date, the stock is up 11.17%.

    The Bottom Line

Shares of Linear Technology (LLTC) currently yield 2.63% based on Tuesday's closing price of $39.55 and its annual payout of $1.04. Integrated circuits maker Linear Technology Corporation (LLTC) said Wednesday that its second quarter profit fell 12% from last year, but results still beat analyst expectations and the company raised its quarterly dividend. The Milpitas, California-based company reported fiscal second quarter net income of $75.5 million, or 33 cents per share, compared with $86.2 million, or 38 cents per share, in the year-ago period. Revenue edged up slightly from last year, to $256.4 million. On average, Wall Street analysts expected a smaller profit of 30 cents per share, on lower revenue of $246.5 million. Linear also announced that its board of directors has approved a 4.5% dividend increase, from 22 cents to 23 cents per share quarterly. The new dividend will be paid on Feb. 24 to shareholders of record as of Feb. 12. Linear Technology shares rose 52 cents, or +1.7%, in premarket trading Wednesday. The company has a 3.04% dividend yield, based on last night’s closing stock price of $30.23. The stock has technical support in the $26-$28 price area. If the shares can firm up, we see overhead resistance around the $33-$34 price levels. We would remain on the sidelines for now.
