    Early on Thursday, aerospace and defense company L-3 Communications Holdings, Inc. (LLL) reported a 10% decline in second quarter profit, as an increase in the cost of sales offset a slight rise in revenues. Looking ahead, the company cut its full year outlook partially due to federal budget cuts. The New York, NY-based company posted a second quarter net income of $185 million, or $2.03 per share, down from $205 million, or $2.08 per share, earned in the same period a year ago. According to analysts polled by Thomson Reuters, the company was expected to earn $1.93 per share in the quarter. L-3 Communication's second quarter net sales advanced 2% to $3.2 billion from $3.14 billion last year. Analysts were expecting the company to post $3.05 billion in revenues for the quarter. The company noted that the growth in revenues was mostly attributed to the performance of the Platform & Logistics Solutions and Command, Control, Communications, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C3ISR) segments. For the full year, the company cut its earnings and revenue outlook. Now, the company expects to see revenues between $12.5 billion and $12.6 billion for the year, down from the previous view of $12.55 billion to $12.75 billion. Earnings for the year are now expected to be between $8.05 and $8.15 per share, down from the previous view of $8.15 to $8.35. Analysts expect L-3 to earn $8.11 per share on revenues of $12.52 billion in 2013. L-3 Communications shares were down a fraction during morning trading on Thursday. The stock is up 20.8% year-to-date.   • L-3 Communications Q1 Profit From Continuing Ops Rises, Beats Estimates; Backs Fiscal 2013 Outlook (LLL)

    Before the opening bell on Thursday, Aerospace and defense company L-3 Communications Holdings, Inc. (LLL) reported a slight drop in first quarter profit. However, earnings from continuing operations rose and topped Wall Street estimates. The New York-based company posted first quarter net income of $192 million, or $2.11 per share, down from $201 million, or $2.01 per share, last year. Earnings from continuing operations were $193 million, or $2.11 per share i the quarter, compared to $186 million, or $1.86 per share, last year. According to Thomson Reuters, the company was expected to earn $1.94 per share from continuing operations in the quarter. In the quarter, the company benefited from a $10 million, or 11 cents per share, tax-benefit related to the reinstatement of the US Federal research and experimentation tax credit. L-3 Communication's net sales rose to $3.19 billion from $3.16 billion last year. Analysts were expecting net sales of $3.04 billion. Looking forward, the company reaffirmed its previous fiscal 2013 guidance. L-3 Communications expects net sales to be between $12.55 billion and $12.75 billion. Earnings per share from continuing operations is expected to be between $8.15 and $8.35. Analysts are expecting the company to earn $8.22 per share on revenues of $12.63 billion in 2013. L-3 Communications shares were down $1.22, or -1.5%, during pre-market trading on Thursday. The stock is up +6.51% year-to-date.
