  • The New York Times Company Reinstates Dividend Payout; Will Now Offer a 1.4% Yield (NYT)

After the close on Thursday, newspaper publisher The New York Times Company (NYT) announced that it is reinstating its dividend payout, nearly four and a half years after it suspended its payout in the midst of the financial crisis. The company will pay out a quarterly dividend of 4 cents per share on October 24 to shareholders of record on October 9, with an ex-dividend payout of October 7. Arthur Sulzberger, chairman of New York Times Co., said, "We are pleased to announce the initiation of this quarterly dividend, which will allow us to return capital to our shareholders while maintaining the financial flexibility necessary to continue to invest in the company's transformation and various growth initiatives." Mark Thompson, president and CEO of New York Times added, "The Board concluded that the strength of our balance sheet justified the restoration of a dividend. Given the expectation of continued volatility in advertising revenue and the fact that our growth strategy is at an early stage of development, we will maintain a prudent view of both the balance sheet and free cash flow." New York Times shares were inactive during pre-market trading on Friday. The stock is up 35.29% year-to-date.

    The Bottom Line

Shares of The New York Times Co. (NYT) offer a dividend yield of 1.39% based on Thursday's closing price of $11.54 and the company's annualized dividend payout of 16 cents per share. The New York Times Company (NYT) is not recommended at this time, holding a Dividend.com DARS™ Rating of 3.1 out of 5 stars. • Report: New York Times Hires Goldman to Sell Boston Globe (NYT)

According to a Boston Globe report, struggling newspaper giant The New York Times Company (NYT) is planning to sell The Globe, with Goldman Sachs pegged as the manager of the sale. The Globe cited two potential unnamed buyers for the report. It said that the New York Times will begin accepting bids for The Boston Globe within a couple of weeks. The New York Times has been struggling to come to labor agreements with Globe labor unions recently, saying it needed to cut costs or risk shutting the newspaper. The Globe posted $50 million in operating losses last year, and is expected to lose $85 million this year. New York Times shares fell 18 cents, or -2.9%, in early afternoon trading Wednesday. The Bottom Line Shares of NYT are off 52-week highs of $17 a share. The stock has technical support in the $4-5 price area. If the shares can firm up, we see overhead resistance around the $9 price level. We do not currently rate this former dividend-paying stock at this time, but we watch the shares of this newspaper giant very closely. The New York Times Company (NYT) suspended its dividend payouts back in February.
