    Department store bellwether Macy's (M) reported its fourth quarter earnings before market open today, which beat analysts' earnings estimates and came in slightly below revenue views.  M's Earnings in Brief
    • M reported fourth quarter net sales of $9.2 billion, compared to last year's Q4 revenues of $9.35 billion; it should be noted that 2012's Q4 contained 14 weeks while 2013's Q4 contained 13. On a comparable basis, M's sales were actually up 1.4%.
    • Net income for the quarter came in at $811 million, which marked an increase from last year's Q4 figure of $730 million.
    • Macy's reported diluted EPS of $2.16 for its fourth quarter, which is much higher than last year's Q4 EPS of $1.83. On an adjusted basis, EPS came in at $2.31.
    • Macy's beat analysts' EPS expectations of $2.17, while revenues were just shy of analysts' expectations of $9.27 billion.
    • Looking ahead, Macy's sees FY2014 EPS in the range of $4.40 to $4.50, which is in line with analysts' expectations.
    CEO Commentary Macy's CEO, president and chairman Terry J. Lundgren, had the following to say about the company's full year results: “Macy’s, Inc. had a strong year in 2013, and we are proud of the continued improvement in our ability to serve evolving customer needs at Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s. This was our fifth consecutive year of double-digit growth in earnings per share and our fourth consecutive year of comparable sales growth. In fact, our total sales have grown by more than $4.4 billion in the past four years. Having generated this sustained level of momentum, we continue to drive for further growth through progressively deeper implementation of the M.O.M. strategies that have set Macy’s, Inc. apart from other retailers." M's Dividend Macy's most recently announced a raise to its dividend in May of last year for its July payout. The company raised its quarterly distribution from 20 cents to 25 cents. We expect Macy's to declare a dividend of 25 cents in the coming days. Stock Performance Macy's stock was down $1.26, or 2.37%, in pre-market trading. YTD, the company's stock is down 0.62%.

  • Macy's, Inc. Announces Job Cuts, Updates Guidance (M)

    The department store juggernaut, Macy's (M) , issued its EPS guidance for the year ahead while also announcing a slew of layoffs on Wednesday.The company reported that its comparable sales grew by 4.3% in 2013 holiday shopping season spanning November to December, marking a healthy improvement over last year's holiday season during which sales expanded by 3.6%. Management expects for comparable sales to grow between 2.5% and 3% in 2014 while EPS is expected to come in the range of $4.40 to $4.50 compared to the previously expected figure of $4.36. In light of the improved growth prospects, Macy's also announced cost reduction plans in an effort to sustain its growing profitability in the new year. More specifically, the company will be laying off approximately 2,500 employees as a result of new organizational changes and cost-cutting efforts. Additionally, the company announced it will be closing the doors on five Macy's stores in early spring 2014. Terry Lundgren, president and CEO, commented, "The actions being announced today reinforce our focus on continuous improvement in our M.O.M. strategies (My Macy’s localization, Omnichannel integration and Magic Selling customer engagement) and will help us to maximize the impact of the exceptional talent we enjoy at every level of our organization." Macy's shares sank lower on Wednesday, shedding 0.65% as the closing bell rang. The stock has gained upwards of 36% over the past 52-week period.
