The Children's Place Posts $7 Million Q2 Loss on Charges, Lower Sales (PLCE)Aug 20, 2009Children's apparel and accessories retailer The Children's Place Retail Stores, Inc. (PLCE) said Thursday that it lost $7.1 million in the second quarter, hurt by lower sales and big one-time charges. The Secaucus, New Jersey-based company reported a second quarter net loss of $7.1 million, or 24 cents per share, compared to a break-even quarter last year. Excluding items, the adjusted loss was $12.4 million, or 42 cents per share. Sales fell 6.6% from last year, to $315.7 million, while same-store sales, considered a key indicator of a retailer's health, plunged 9%. On average, Wall Street analysts expected a bigger loss of 44 cents per share, on nearly matching revenue of $315.4 million. The Children's Place shares fell $1.87, or -5.9%, in morning trading Thursday. The Bottom Line The stock is off 52-week highs of $42 a share. The stock has technical support in the $25 price area. If the shares can firm up, we see overhead resistance around the $34-$37 price levels. We do not currently rate this non-dividend paying stock, but we do follow the company closely.
