  • WellPoint Q1 Profit Rises 3% on 16% Higher Revenues; Boosts Fiscal 2013 Outlook (WLP)

Shares of health insurance provider WellPoint, Inc. (WLP) spiked in early trading on Wednesday, after the company reported better-than-expected profits in the first quarter as the company benefited from membership increase following its acquisition of Amerigroup. The Indianapolis, Indiana-based company posted a first quarter net income of $885.2 million, or $2.89 per share, 3% higher than last year's first quarter profit of $856.5 million, or $2.52 per share. The first quarter earnings include a 5 cents per share net investment loss. Excluding the net investment loss, adjusted net income came in at $898.9 million, or $2.94 per share, in the first quarter. This topped analysts' estimates of $2.38 per share, according to Thomson Reuters. WellPoint's total operating revenue in the first quarter was $17.55 billion, up 16% from $15.15 billion last years. However, this missed the Wall Street expectation of $18.02 billion in revenue. The first quarter results benefited from the acquisition of Medicaid coverage provider Amerigroup Corp., which closed late last year. The acquisition added more than 2 million members to the company's total enrollment. Looking forward, the company now expects full year 2013 net income to be at least $7.75 per share, which includes the 5 cents per share net investment loss from the first quarter. Excluding that loss, earnings are expected to be at least $7.80 per share, up from the previous forecast of $7.60 per share. This is above the Wall Street expectation that WellPoint will earn $7.78 per share in 2013. Wayne DeVeydt, executive vice president and chief financial officer, said, "Our quarterly results were ahead of our plan both at the operating gain level and below the line, and were supported by strong quality metrics. We have modestly raised our full year EPS outlook as a reflection of our performance, but are still being prudent as many of the uncertainties inherent in our original guidance still exist." WellPoint shares were up $4.65, or +6.29%, during Wednesday morning trading. The stock is up +13.80% year-to-date. The Bottom Line Shares of WellPoint (WLP) have a dividend yield of 2.03% based on Wednesday's intraday trading price of $73.98 and the company's annualized dividend payout of $1.50 per share. WellPoint, Inc. (WLP) is not recommended at this time, holding a Dividend.com DARS™ Rating of 3.4 out of 5 stars.
