  • Qwest Takes its Long-Distance Unit off the Market (Q)

Qwest Communications International Inc. (Q) said Monday that is ending the auction for its nationwide long-distance business, amid several reports that bidding was slow and much lower than Qwest had anticipated. Since it didn't receive nearly the offer it was looking for, Denver-based Qwest has taken the unit off the market, saying it was too valuable for it to sell at a low price. Qwest's long-distance unit helps support its local calling service and its municipal/government businesses. Price competition in the telecom industry has continually lowered the unit's earnings for several years in a row. Qwest shares fell 26 cents, or 6.2%, in early afternoon trading Monday. The Bottom Line We have avoided shares of Qwest since our early June coverage began, when the stock was trading at $4.70. The company has a dividend yield of 7.67%, based on Friday’s closing stock price of $4.17. The stock has technical support in the $3.00-3.40. If the shares can firm up, we see overhead resistance around the $5 price mark. We would remain on the sidelines for now. Qwest Communications International Inc. (Q) is not recommended at this time, holding a Dividend.com DARS™ Rating of 3.0 out of 5 stars. • Qwest gets Upgrade from J.P. Morgan (Q)

Qwest Communications International Inc. (Q) was upgraded Tuesday by J.P. Morgan analysts. The Denver-based communications services company, which provides Internet, voice, and data services, was upgraded from "neutral" to "overweight." J.P. Morgan analysts cited "relatively strong enterprise revenue trends, conservative guidance, upside from potential M&A, as well as an attractive valuation" for the upgrade. J.P. Morgan also set a new price target of $6 for December on Qwest's stock. Qwest shares rose 27 cents, or +6.7%, in morning trading Tuesday following the upgrade. The Bottom Line We have avoided shares of Qwest since our early June coverage began, when the stock was trading at $4.70. The company has a dividend yield of 7.98%, based on Friday's closing stock price of $4.01. The stock has technical support in the $3.00-3.40. If the shares can firm up, we see overhead resistance around the $5 price mark. We would remain on the sidelines for now. Qwest Communications International Inc.
