Ventas- (VTR)-operates as a healthcare real estate investment trust in the United States. It finances, owns, and leases healthcare related and senior housing facilities. As of December 31, 2005, Ventas owned 200 nursing facilities, 41 hospitals, and 139 seniors housing and other facilities in 42 states. It also leased 225 facilities, as of the above date. The company has elected to be taxed as a real estate investment trust. As a result, it would not be subject to corporate income tax on that portion of its net income that is distributed to shareholders. Ventas was founded in 1983 and is based in Louisville, Kentucky.
