  • Bank of Hawaii Earnings Decline; Revenue Misses Estimates (BOH)

On Monday, financial services company Bank of Hawaii Corporation (BOH) reported a drop in its second quarter earnings, but the results still came in above analysts estimates. The Honolulu, HI-based company recorded second quarter earnings of $37.7 million, or 85 cents per share, down 7% from $40.7 million, or 90 cents per share a year ago. Analysts expected to see earnings of 83 cents per share. Total revenue fell 5% during the quarter to $135.4 million, missing analyst's estimates of $137 million. Peter Ho, the banks chairman and CEO noted, "Bank of Hawaii Corporation continued its trend of solid performance in the second quarter of 2013." "Overall loan balances grew 3% from the same quarter last year as strong commercial, indirect automobile and certain other consumer loan growth was partially offset by refinance sensitive loan categories namely residential mortgage and home equity loans. The organization continues to attract quality deposits with consumer and commercial deposit balances up 4% in the quarter from last year. Asset quality continued its trend of improvement in the quarter with lower levels of non-performing assets and a lower ratio of net charge offs to loans. Expenses remained controlled. The recent trend in higher interest rates should positively impact our operating earnings over time through improved net interest margin. We would note, however, that nearer term, we will likely see a meaningful slowing in our mortgage banking business as the refinance market potentially slows and the purchase market remains impacted by exceptionally tight housing inventory," Ho added. Bank of Hawaii shares were down 58 cents, or 1.06%, during Monday morning trading. The stock is up 22% YTD. The Bottom Line Shares of Bank of Hawaii Corporation (BOH) have a 3.34% yield based on Monday morning's price of $53.92. Bank of Hawaii Corporation (BOH) is not recommended at this time, holding a Dividend.com DARS™ Rating of 3.4 out of 5 stars. • Time to Say Aloha to The Bank of Hawaii (BOH)

The Bank of Hawaii (BOH) may be located in paradise, but perfect weather and great scenery won't help this bank sidestep the current U.S. economic weakness. Higher-than-expected oil and commodity prices, combined with a super-tight credit crunch, is having an impact on the number of tourists the "Big Island" will be hosting. The loss of Aloha and ATA airlines, along with a couple of cruises changing their destination points have hurt, as well. Bank of Hawaii's current dividend yield of nearly 4% is adequate, but not enticing enough to keep us comfortable in the troubled banking sector. Shares of BOH are down nearly 13% in the past year, and we think investors should look for a better investment paradise at this point. Bank of Hawaii (BOH) is not recommended at this time, and currently holds a Dividend.com rating of 3.3 out of 5 stars.
