    Insurance company, Mercury General Corporation (MCY) reported a drop in profits on Monday, but beat analysts first quarter estimates. The Los Angeles, CA based company reported first quarter net income of $66.46 million, or $1.21 per share, down -9% from $73.36 million, or $1.34 per share last year. Operating income was $37.73 million, or 69 cents per share, down from $39.13 million, or 71 cents per share last year. On average, analysts expected to see earnings of 48 cents per share. Revenue for the quarter increased 2% to $740.15 million, from $722.68 million last year. Analysts expected to see $703.27 million in revenue. The company reported that its quarterly results were positively effected by a $3 million reserve development from business in Florida and New Jersey. The quarter was negatively impacted by a $10 million pre-tax charge related to restructuring costs. Additionally, MCY announced that its board has approved a quarterly dividend of 61 cents per share. This dividend will be payable on June 27 to shareholders of record on June 13. Mercury General shares were up 77 cents, or 1.81% during Monday morning trading.     Auto insurer Mercury General Corporation (MCY) on Monday posted better-than-expected first quarter earnings results, helped by higher revenue and a lower combined ratio. The Los Angeles-based company reported first quarter net income of $73.4 million, or $1.34 per share, compared with $58.2 million, or $1.06 per share, in the year-ago peroid. Excluding one-time items operating income was 71 cents per share. Revenue rose 2.4% from last year to $722.68 million. On average, Wall Street analysts expected a smaller profit of 68 cents per share, on lower revenue of $679.46 million. Mercury General shares posted small losses in morning trading Monday. The Bottom Line Shares of Mercury General (MCY) have a 5.36% dividend yield, based on Friday's closing stock price of $45.50. The stock has technical support in the $41-$42 price area.     Auto, home, and property insurer Mercury General Corporation (MCY) said Monday that its second quarter profit jumped 38% from last year, helped by $67 in investment gains. The Los Angeles-based company reported second quarter net income of $114.4 million, or $2.07 per share, compared with $70.7 million, or $1.29 per share, in the year-ago period. Excluding a one-time $67 million investment gain, operating income was $47.3 million, or 86 cents a share, which was essentially flat from last year. Even excluding that gain, results still easily beat analyst estimates. On average, Wall Street analysts expected a much lower profit of 71 cents per share, excluding items. Mercury said that its net written premiums dropped 6.8% in the second quarter, to $637.4 million from $648.2 million last year. On a more positive note, however, its combined ratio fell to 96.1% from 97%. Combined ratio is considered a key metric for insurers, because it measures the amount of money the company pays out in claims versus how much revenue it generates from new business. Mercury General shares rose 76 cents, or +2.2%, in morning trading Monday. The Bottom Line We had removed shares of MCY from our “Recommended” list back on Oct.6, when the stock was trading at $53.91. The company has a 6.62% dividend yield, based on Friday’s closing stock price of $35.07. The stock has technical support in the $28-$30 price area. If the shares can firm up, we see overhead resistance around the $37-$40 price range.
