  • Clarcor Q2 Profit Plunges 32%, Missing Estimates; Cuts Full-Year Guidance (CLC)

Filtration and Packaging company Clarcor Inc. (CLC) said Thursday that its second quarter profit fell 32% from last year, hurt by a sales slowdown amid the global economic recession. The Franklin, Tennessee-based company reported second quarter net income of $16.8 million, or 33 cents per share, compared with $24.6 million, or 48 cents per share, in the year-ago period. Quarterly sales dropped 14% percent from last year, to $229.4 million from $267.1 million. On average, Wall Street analysts expected a bigger profit of 38 cents per share on higher revenue of $242.7 million. Despite saying it expects sales to pick up in the third and fourth quarters, Clarcor cut its full-year profit outlook for the second time this year. The company said it now expects earnings per share to range between $1.40 and $1.60, down from previously reduced guidance of $1.60 to $1.75 per share. On average, Wall Street analysts currently expect full-year profits of $1.56 per share. Clarcor shares fell 89 cents, or -2.9%, in late morning trading Thursday. The Bottom Line We have avoided shares of CLC since our early June coverage began last year, when the stock was trading at $41.62. The company has a dividend yield of 1.18%, based on last night's closing stock price of $30.57. The stock has technical support in the $23-25 price area. If the shares can firm up, we see overhead resistance around the $32-36 price level. We would remain on the sidelines for now. Clarcor Inc. (CLC) is not recommended at this time, holding a Dividend.com DARS™ Rating of 3.2 out of 5 stars.
