  • Worthington Q4 Profit Falls on Lower Revenues; Adjusted EPS Misses Estimates (WOR)

Before the opening bell on Thursday, diversified metals processing company Worthington Industries, Inc. (WOR) reported a decline in fourth quarter profits on lower revenues, primarily due to a number of charges and falling steel prices. Adjusted earnings missed Wall Street analysts' view, but revenues topped expectations. The Columbus, Ohio-based company said it earned $33.5 million, or 46 cents per share, in the fourth quarter, down from $52.1 million, or 75 cents per share, earned in the same period a year ago. These fourth quarter results included a number of impairment and restructuring charges, which totaled $10.8 million. Excluding these charges, which equaled 14 cents per share, and 2 cents per share in inventory holding losses, Worthington's adjusted earnings were 62 cents per share in the fourth quarter. According to analysts polled by Thomson Reuters, Worthington was expected to earn an adjusted 65 cents per share in the quarter. The company's net sales in the quarter fell 7% to $704.1 million from $755.4 million last year. This decrease was primarily due to lower average selling prices. Analysts were expecting the company to see revenue of $699.55 million. John McConnell, Chairman and CEO of Worthington, said, "Our outlook remains positive. We are positioned for growth both organically and from our acquisitions." He added, "We enter the new fiscal year with a solid strategy focused on continuing to deliver strong results with a dedicated management team and workforce. There is continued strength in automotive with shortened or eliminated summer shutdowns and we anticipate some improvement in commercial construction. Our Cylinders business has nicely integrated its two recently acquired businesses in the oil and gas tank market." Worthington shares were down $1.46, or 4.51%, during morning trading on Thursday. The stock is up 19.05% year-to-date. The Bottom Line Shares of Worthington (WOR) have a dividend yield of 3.40% based on Thursday's intraday trading price of $30.57 and the company's annualized dividend payout of $1.04 per share. • Worthington Industries Q1 Profit Beats View, but Revenue Falls Well Short (WOR)

Metals processing company Worthington Industries, Inc. (WOR) said late Tuesday that its first quarter profit beat analyst expectations, helped by lower costs and higher demand for its steel. The Columbus, Ohio-based company reported fiscal first quarter net income of $6.7 million, or 8 cents per share, down from $68.6 million, or 86 cents per share, in the year-ago period. Excluding one-time charges, adjusted profit was 11 cents per share. Net sales plummeted more than 54% from last year, to $417.5 million. On average, Wall Street analysts expected a much smaller profit of 4 cents per share, but on significantly higher revenue of $461.9 million. Worthington shares fell 6 cents, or -0.4%, in premarket trading Wednesday.
