  • McDermott's Q2 Profit Falls 48% on Lower Revenue and Higher Pension Costs (MDR)

Energy and power infrastructure company McDermott International (MDR) late Monday said that its second quarter profit fell 48% from last year, but results still beat analyst expectations. The Houston-based company reported second quarter net income of $92.6 million, or 40 cents per share, compared with $177.5 million, or 77 cents per share, in the year-ago period. Revenue fell 13% from last year to $1.56 billion. On average, Wall Street analysts expected a lower profit of 37 cents per share, but on higher revenue of $1.59 billion. The company cited lower power generation systems revenue and higher pension costs for the profit decrease. McDermott, which provides construction and engineering services to the oil and gas industry, said that its customers scaled back major projects amid the recession. One bright spot for the company was its government operations unit, which saw a 15% boost in revenue on higher spending for nuclear fuels. McDermott shares rose 57 cents, or +2.7%, in morning trading Tuesday. The Bottom Line Shares of MDR are off 52-week highs of $42 a share. The stock has technical support in the $16-$17 price area. If the shares can firm up, we see overhead resistance around the $25-$26 price levels. We do not currently rate this non-dividend paying stock, but we do follow the company closely. • McDermott International Q4 Profit Falls 73% (MDR)

McDermott International Inc. (MDR) said Monday that its fourth quarter profits fell short of analyst expectations, but posted quarterly and full-year revenue gains. The Houston-based company, which provides construction and engineering services for oil and gas companies, reported a fourth quarter profit of $43 million, or 19 cents per share, a 73% drop from the nearly $160 million, or 70 cents per share, that the company earned in the year-ago period. Revenue for the fourth quarter rose 9% to $1.66 billion from $1.53 billion a year ago. On average, Wall Street analysts expected a fiscal fourth quarter profit of 23 cents per share on revenue of $1.62 billion. McDermott itself had previously provided guidance of between 16 and 19 cents per share. McDermott's quarterly results were hampered by higher costs in the company's offshore oil and gas segment. As for the full-year 2008, the company said that profits fell 29% to $429.3 million, compared with $607.8 million in 2007. Revenue rose 17%, however, to $657.2 million from $563.2 last year. McDermott shares fell about 52 cents, or -5.7%, in early trading Tuesday. The Bottom Line Shares of MDR are way off of all-time highs of $62 a share hit last June. Like most energy services companies, the stock has been slaughtered over the last six months. The stock has technical support in the $6 price area. If the shares can manage to stabilize, we see overhead resistance in the $13-14 price range. We do not currently rate this non-dividend paying stock, but we do follow its news as well as the oil services sector. McDermott International Inc. (MDR) does not currently pay a dividend.
