It seems like going into double-digit percentages for unemployment was no big deal for Wall Street today as the reaction was rather muted, seeing slight gains across the major averages.

Volume was light once again, finishing with just 4.28 Billion shares traded at the NYSE and just 1.88 Billion shares traded over at the NASDAQ. Dividend earnings winners from today included International Game Technology (IGT), and EOG Resources (EOG). The casino agenda seems to be catching on in most states now as the scramble to recoup tax revenues has politicians thinking about gambling initiatives. This can certainly help IGT going forward and we will keep an eye on it. As for Dividend earnings losers today, they included Sotheby’s (BID), Sunoco (SUN), and CBS Corporation (CBS).

Gold plays rose once again, with Newmont Mining (NEM), AngloGold (AU) and Iamgold (IAG) all moving higher. The sector is trading on pure momentum at the moment, but we are staying on the sidelines. Wall Street upgrades helped some of our recommendations today, with Home Depot (HD), Travelers (TRV), and General Electic (GE) all up.

Earnings begin to settle down some next week, but we will be looking for results from the likes of Fluor Corp (FLR), J.C. Penney (JCP), Macy’s (M), and Applied Materials (AMAT) as just some of who will be out with earnings numbers.
